Japan is a mecca for every skier and snowboarder due to the colossal amounts of powder it scores per season. The main mountain filled island is Honshu.
In Honshu most of the resorts are in the Nagano region; Myoko and Madarao are known for the amazing freeride options.
Nozawa Onsen is known for the annual fire festival and is a beautiful village in traditional Japanese style. Hakuba and Shiga Kogen are the biggest and most familiar resorts in Honshu. Of course there are many more possibilities for those looking for a traditional Japanese experience while avoiding crowds!
In the north island, Hokkaido, Niseko is a very well known place. Here you not only find meters of the lightest pow, but also plenty of bars and restaurants. Very lively!
Of course Hokkaido has much more to offer; Furano, Rusutsu and Tomamu offer great ‘sidecountry’ treeruns. Hokkaido also offers some amazing backcountry possibilities like touring active volcanoes, hiking the tallest mountain of Hokkaido or touring the Daisetsuzan National Park.
After an amazing day riding 'First' tracks you can unwind in one of the many natural hotsprings, 'onsens' or indulge in the amazing food Japan has to offer!
