18 – 28 January, 2020

At the end of our Curry Powder backcountry tour of Indian Kashmir, you’ll have stories to tell for the rest of your life! Stories about the incredible terrain surrounded by 8000m peaks, the amount of snow that falls resembling Japan and the beautiful, kind people always wanting to help and talk to you. Combine that with the beautiful culture, and you’re in for an unforgettable backcountry experience!

You’ll start this trip in Delhi, one of the largest and busiest cities in India. Here you can spend some time to explore this hectic city and get used to the time difference. Early next morning meet at the airport and fly over the Himalayas towards Srinagar. A Jeep will be waiting for you and transfer you to Gulmarg – the adventure begins here! The drive to Gulmarg goes through Srinagar and winds through busy streets with markets stalls and past army personnel on every corner. Eventually you’ll pass a beautiful lake. On the way you’ll stop to buy some fresh fruits from one of the markets and our driver will take you to a “secret” liquor store to buy some alcohol for the week ahead. The drive then continues to the snow-covered Himalayan mountains and the beautiful hotel in Gulmarg.

Gulmarg is a resort with 1 chairlift and 2 gondolas, one of which reaches just under 4000m. The summit of Mt Apharwat is a few hundred meters above that. Some bowls from the top have a 1200m vertical descent! The amount of terrain is virtually unlimited and includes everything from steep chutes to open bowls and some super fun treeruns. Furthermore, some of the unforgettable runs will end at local villages, not only doubling the verticle meters but also adding a whole new dimension to this backcountry tour.

After having spent 8 days exploring the best backcountry runs in Gulmarg with our local guides you’ll have the opportunity to head out for an epic heliski experience if the snow conditions and the weather permits. A modern helicopter brings you to amazing zones for 5 unforgettable, untouched descents down!

To finish off the last day, transfer back to Srinagar and stay in a freshly renovated, traditional houseboat on Dal Lake. Enjoy a delicious homecooked meal and good nights rest, The next morning you get to experience how the locals trade via wooden boats before flying back to Delhi.

Discover Gulmarg quickly before the masses discover this place and you might nnot have all that amazing powder just for yourself!

Day 1 - Delhi

Welcome to Delhi! From Delhi international airport we'll take a short flight over the beautiful Himalayan mountains towards Srinagar in Indian Kashmir. Upon arrival, a porter will take our luggage to our 4x4 Jeeps who are waiting just outside the terminal to drive us to Gulmarg. Underway we'll stop at a local fruit market and at a "secret" liquor store to buy some alcohol for the week ahead (in Gulmarg no alcohol sold). Check into the hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon getting used to the altitude and walking around the super quiet town before our first dinner back at the hotel.

  • Accommodation in a comfortable hotel, Gulmarg

Day 2 until 9 - Gulmarg

We'll spend these 8 days exploring the vast backcountry terrain Gulmarg has to offer. If the weather permits we'll use the 2 lifts and short hikes to get us to some unbelievable backcountry terrain. Think of open bowls, steep chutes or gentle open fields which all get back to the gondola - the possibilities are endless. After a few runs in the morning near the lift, we'll head further into the backcountry to do a final run which could end as low as 2000m, that's a run with 2000 vertical meters! If on any of these days the weather isn't playing along and the lifts are closed, we'll head towards the steep treeruns just below the hotel. All runs either end up near a road or in a town where a 4x4 Jeep will be waiting to drive us back to the top. Kashmiri cat skiing we call it!
  • Good buffet breakfast
  • Lift ticket Gulmarg
  • All day guiding around Gulmarg backcountry
  • 4x4 Jeep transfers (when needed)
  • Dinner
  • Accommodation in a comfortable hotel, Gulmarg

Day 10 - Heliskiing

Depending on snow and weather conditions we'll have the choice of spending the day riding some unbelievable, untouched terrain only accessible via helicopter. A modern helicopter will take our group to Sunshine Peak where we have the choice of riding 5 lines of our choosing! If the weather doesn't allow for heliskiing, or the group is not up for it, we'll have another day with our local guide to ride some of our favorite lines of the week! After having spent the last day either heliskiing or exploring new backcountry terrain in Gulmarg, a 4x4 Jeep will take us back to Srinagar in the afternoon. On the way, we can stop at a local cashmere factory and learn about the different types of cashmere. Eventually, we'll arrive on the shores of Dal Lake where a small boat will take us to a newly renovated house.
  • Good buffet breakfast
  • Lift ticket Gulmarg (if needed)
  • All day guiding around Gulmarg backcountry or during heliskiing
  • Accommodation in a comfortable hotel, Gulmarg

I’ve joined First Tours to Japan and India, and both tours offered memories that will stay with me forever. Bottomless snow, great culture, amazing food. Around every corner hid a secret that left an everlasting impression on me. First Tours organized everything perfectly, and even so, we were still flexible enough to move around the travel itinerary according to the best possible snow conditions.

EXPERIENCE + GEAR

This tour is for the intermediate to experienced rider. Experience in deep snow is not necessary but recommended to get as much out of your holiday as possible.

The hotel is located at 2,650m altitude and on most runs we start from around 4000m. Because some of these runs are accessible via hikes and start from this high altitude a good physical fitness is advised to prevent altitude sickness.

Because most of the runs are backcountry runs and are unpatrolled, backcountry equipment (backpack, beacon, shovel & probe) is  a must!

A good waterproof but breathable jacket and pants with good layering is very handy. For example, consider the Beast series from Airblaster available at Behind The Pines in Amsterdam.

Must have a min of 4 people to operate.
